Health at Home

This section provides a list of HealthTech and AgeTech products that can help us stay independent as we age.

With the rise of Virtual wards, also known as Hospital at Home, we will be well served to understand how we can monitor ourselves, and get used to integrating new tech into our homes.

Help around the Home and Beyond

Once we have made sure that the house we want to future-proof is as age-friendly and safe as possible, we need to think about devices that can be installed to help us Age in Place. All of these are found on other pages of this site, but they’re all gathered here to help you understand the collective options.

As with many of the products and services on the site, many of these are bought as a reaction to an acute problem, sometimes leading to poor decision-making and always missing the potential to avoid a problem in the first place.

So, think about these products and how they might be useful before they are essential. Give yourself time to choose the best option for you and get used to using them in advance of them being a critical part of a care plan.

Sleep Hub

There are a lot of sleep apps around (see Sleep Apps and Other Resources). This is a product called Sleep Hub from Cambridge Sleep Science. Their tech is being built into all sorts of products these days, but this was the original device. Mrs AFAH and I sleep well, so I can’t judge this, but they have a 14-day money-back guarantee, so it may be worth a try if you suffer from lack of sleep.

Bide – Night-time Reassurance

Bide is a fall-prevention device that supports older people to help them live safely and independently at home. It’s a simple device that records a message with nighttime reassurance, and a reminder to take care when it detects someone getting out of bed. It’s a move away from devices that deliver a barrage of messages to a carer, it doesn’t need internet interaction, it’s super easy to set up, and it provides a nice personal touch. Electric blind in bedroom with remote control
Smart Tech

Appeal Electric Blinds

Take control of the light in your house… at the touch of a button!

An electric blind in a bedroom, or any room in the house, can be a useful addition to a home.

People with reduced mobility can find these incredibly convenient.

Having full light in a room when getting up can prevent falls.

Blinds can be controlled with a dedicated remote, a smartphone, or can be voice-activated. Blinds can also be set on a timer to open and close at set times.

Health Monitoring

Smart Tech

Aktiia – Blood Pressure Monitor

This clever little device reads your blood pressure every hour – even when you’re sleeping. It can even send it to your doctor. I use a simple OMRON device (see below…), but I am thinking of upgrading to this. As always, please send us your feedback.

We like this simple-to-use device because it doesn’t rely on wearing a smart watch. You can share photos, make video calls, monitor your living environment, and make direct contact when needed. Air Purifiers

White Air Purifier Unit
Recommended Supplier

Healthy Air 500

We really like this product as a long-term investment in health in general, but especially for older people and those with conditions like COPD, reduced lung capacity, or other serious illness.

We should live in a space that has the best quality air possible. My family suffers from hayfever and allergies, and we find that using a HEPA air filter really helps in the pollen-heavy springtime. Healthy Air have taken a medical-grade purifier and produced an affordable home version. Click on the video for my thoughts…

Interestingly, this purifier breaks down air pollutants into something harmless — that is, it can actually remove viruses like flu, Covid, etc.
