Miss-use of Power of Attorney
Articles like this one from the BBC today make me so angry. The biggest issue we have when it comes to ageing well is thinking, planning and talking about the issues that are coming down the line. When someone does that they should be rewarded with peace of mind.
The BBC reported on Elderly individuals in south-east England losing control of their finances and property after granting lasting power of attorney a law firm.
It looks like about 30 cases revealed restricted access to bank accounts, unexplained cash withdrawals, undervalued property sales, and possessions disposed of without consent. A family nightmare.
LPAs, are meant to protect individuals by allowing trusted attorneys to manage decisions. It’s great that they have surged in popularity but it does raise concerns about oversight.
It makes me so angry that people who are doing the right thing should be treated so badly, and that people will be put off from what is a vital action.
As always, if in doubt talk to someone. Citizens Advice can help, as well as groups like Which?
