Digital Inclusion

Trying to keep that Christmas connection all year long

The holidays are a wonderful time to get together with family, and each year we say “we must get together more during the year.” For some, however, this is not easy or even possible.

For many of us digital devices – our phones, computers, tablets, etc – are the easiest way to keep some sort of connection with family and friends, but for some older people inclusion in this digital community can be difficult.

My eldest said to me just before Christmas, “I’m not really that bothered about the presents, I just love when we all get together.” Please note: This did not stop them from asking for and accepting some great outfits and a load of driving lessons as presents on the day!

When my two kids were born my mother in law lived in America, and so Grandma lived on the computer screen. She was there for bath time, ever present at meals, and often the one to read the bedtime story… all from a rectangular screen, with beautiful sunshine in the background.

We were lucky. Grandma was young and savvy enough to use the electricians needed, and the wonders of Zoom and Skype had just arrived in time. For many, even the simplest phones, tablets and computer end up being a barrier, rather than a bridge, to better, longer and more frequent communications.

So, for Christmas this year I took my own advice…

In my day job I work for a company that providers age-friendly mobile phones. We provide phones that can be set for people of any technical interest or ability. The phones are simple to use, and we ask the users and their families what apps they will actually use. We add the NHS app and offer exercise, wellbeing, entertainment apps, all aimed at the ability and wants of the person who will use it.

I love seeing people who have failed to get on with simple and age-friendly devices in the past, embrace technology and open up a new world of communication.
